This binoculars replaced the 10x binoculars I used for over 40 years. Figure 1 shows what is in the packing box. It includes the binoculars, a soft case, a neck strap and instructions. What I liked was that the front lens cap attaches to the binoculars and the back lens cap attaches to the neck strap making it less likely to get lost. I am an amateur astronomer so I was interested in these binoculars from an astronomy perspective and these binoculars did not disappoint! I do a lot of outreach showing people the sky through large telescopes. At these events I am often asked what is the best first telescope. When I tell them a good pair of binoculars people are usually surprised. The reason is that it is a good introduction to the sky. They are small, easy to use and can be a much better introduction to astronomy. Going further you will need a telescope, but then you will need a pair of binoculars, and I use them all the time.
I own several binoculars shown in Figure 2. From the rear left are a 7x35, 11x80, a SvBONY 10x42 (reviewed here) and my trusty 10x50 Sears binoculars. The 7x35 is for general daytime use and the 11x80 is made for astronomy but must be used on a tripod. I have owned the Sears 10x50s binoculars for over 40 years and they have always performed excellently for nighttime and daytime use. However, the SV40s have now replaced them. The SV40s are a little heavier than others in their class, at 22 ounces, but much lighter than the 10x50s at 33 ounces. Optically, they do not exhibit the halation that is common in cheaper binoculars and are much more effective. Focusing is easy and accurate for observing celestial objects not only by day but also at night. This binocular can actually focus to within 10 feet, much closer than any of the binoculars I own.
For this review, we also purchased the SvBONY Full Metal Binocular Tripod Bracket and the SvBONY Universal Portable Adapter Mount for Binoculars. Although you can hold the binoculars by hand while observing celestial objects, we recommend that you fix the tripod bracket. The complete setup including the SV40, tripod adapter, and portable adapter is shown in Figure 3.
Finally, I will repeat what I wrote in the first line, the big binoculars are great value for money! Astronomy, sporting events, wildlife watching, anything you need to see up close, these binoculars can satisfy your desires. I will be going on vacation to Hawaii soon and I will take these binoculars with me to observe astronomical objects further south.
